The dangers with forklift operation are not limited to the periods where an operator is traveling, handling loads, and other tasks that have obvious dangers. Refueling and recharging equipment can also pose certain hazards which is why it’s important to evaluate an operator’s competent in this area.
Here are some of the things that need to be evaluated while the operator is refueling or recharging the equipment:
A forklift should never be “hot fueled”. This means that the equipment is completely shut down with fuel sources turned off in accordance with the equipment manufacturer’s guidelines.
For example, when changing a propane tank, the operator must not only shut down the forklift but also close the propane tank’s service valve.
It’s important to reference the operator’s manual to fully understand all aspects of correctly fueling/recharging the specific equipment your operator is using.
Depending on the specific equipment being used and the guidelines contained within the operator’s manual, PPE may be required when refueling or recharging the equipment.
It’s important to pay particular attention throughout the evaluation relating to the operator’s regard for personal protective equipment. If the operator fails to use the PPE while refueling or recharging the equipment, they may also disregard the requirement in other areas of their duties.
The fueling and recharging areas can be unique from workplace to workplace. This is one of the reasons that most workplaces have specific procedures and guidelines that need to be followed when refueling / recharging industrial trucks.
As we previously mentioned, it’s best to use the company’s specific written guidelines to measure the operator’s performance in this area during the evaluation.
