Lifting Personnel

Not all workplaces use lifting devices or lift personnel with forklifts in their operation, so you may not have the opportunity to evaluate your operator in this area.

If this is the case, it’s still a good idea to cover the points below once more with the operator at some point during the evaluation encase they encounter the scenario at some point in the future.

All of the items below are straightforward and only require a brief description.

Only Uses a Properly Designed Platform

When lifting personnel, operator’s should only use properly designed platforms that have been approved for use by the equipment manufacturer.

Skids, baskets, and “homemade” devices should never be used for lifting personnel.

Ensures That Personnel are Using the Correct Fall Protection Systems

Some lifting systems may require the use of additional fall protection or restraint systems such as a harness and lanyard. Operators must never lift personnel without the required fall protection systems in place. This is applicable regardless of the duration of the lift.

Maintains Communication Throughout Lifting and Lowering

Operators should remain in constant communication with the individuals being lifted. Depending on the circumstances around the lift, additional devices such as radios may be required to ensure this takes place.

Remains at the Controls at All Time

An operator should never leave the forklift’s controls when lifting and lowering an individual. The operator must remain in controls of the cab and functions at all times through the lift to ensure there is no opportunity for another individual to activate the controls. Additionally, remaining at the controls will allow the operator to react appropriately in the event that things do not go as planned.
